The Crocker Riverside Running Club was started in 2004 by three moms in Sacramento who wanted to share their enthusiasm for running. They designed a program for their children’s local elementary school, Crocker Riverside, which would involve kids and their parents. The goal of the program is simple – for everyone to enjoy themselves while they are getting fit.
The club is offered one day a week after school for one hour in the spring and fall to 1st through 6th graders and follows a simple format. The format is based on fun activities for the kids while building on fitness and running skills in a non-competitive fashion based on participation and spending time outdoors. Parents can volunteer to help provide moral support and join in the activity. The ultimate goals of the program are to build self esteem and to inspire the children and their parents to develop lifetime habits of fitness and healthy eating while having fun! As Grace Nelson, a 7 year old in the club says, “I may not be the fastest, but when I run with my friends I feel good about myself and have fun”. |
